Out of work and in need of cash in order to keep his two young daughters, ex-con Walker Payne (Jason Patric) is approached by vagabond gambler Syrus (Sam Shepard), who tries to convince him to enter his beloved pit bull, Brute, into the brutal world of dogfighting.
