While on a train headed to Washington, D.C., to assume a new post on a submarine, Navy lieutenant Ward Stewart (Tyrone Power) falls for teacher Jean Hewlitt (Anne Baxter). Although the feeling's mutual, Stewart doesn't know that Hewlitt is the girlfriend of his commanding officer, Lt. Commander Dewey Connors (Dana Andrews).
