Born in Boston on April 29, 1970, Uma Thurman grew up in a spiritual household with a father who taught Buddhist studies at New York's Columbia University. Although she made her film debut in Kiss Daddy Goodnight (1987), it was her role in 1989's erotically charged Dangerous Liaisons that first attracted critical attention.

That same year, Thurman made a brief but memorable appearance as Botticelli's Venus in The Adventures of Baron Munchausen. She then broke through to icon status with her role in Quentin Tarantino's Pulp Fiction (1994), for which she earned a Best Actress Oscar nomination.

Thurman has shown her acting range in The Truth About Cats & Dogs (1996), Gattaca (1997), the HBO's movie Hysterical Blindness, Tarantino's two-volume Kill Bill series (2003 and 2004) and the Get Shorty sequel, Be Cool (2004).
