Born on March 7, 1971, in London to an Austrian psychoanalyst mother and a Hungarian inventor father, Rachel Weisz attended Cambridge University, where she appeared in student productions and co-founded a drama group called Talking Tongues, which won a Guardian Student Drama Award at the Edinburgh Festival. She gained recognition in Britain when she co-starred with Ewan McGregor in the BBC miniseries The Scarlet and the Black (1993).

In 1996, Weisz made her feature-film debut in Bernardo Bertolucci's Stealing Beauty, and in 1997, landed her first leading role in the period drama Swept from the Sea. Other notable films include The Mummy, Enemy at the Gates, About a Boy, Runaway Jury and Constantine.

In 2005, Weisz co-starred with Ralph Fiennes in The Constant Gardener, a performance that earned her critical acclaim and numerous honors, including an Oscar and a Golden Globe Award.
