After being diagnosed with a brain tumor, Ruffalo underwent surgery and returned to work in a series of films that displayed his acting range, including somber movies such as My Life Without Me (2003) and We Don't Live Here Anymore (2004).
Ruffalo also tackled comedies such as View from the Top (2003) and 13 Going on 30 (2004), thrillers such as Collateral (2004) and oddball roles such as his part in Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (2004).
